Background of the study
Library outreach programs have emerged as influential platforms for promoting career development among youths in diverse communities. In Epe Local Government Area, Lagos State, libraries have strategically extended their services beyond traditional boundaries by offering career guidance sessions, vocational training workshops, and mentorship opportunities. These programs aim to bridge the gap between academic learning and career readiness, thereby equipping youths with skills relevant to the modern job market (Adebola, 2023). By leveraging partnerships with local industries and community organizations, library outreach initiatives are designed to create avenues for career advancement and entrepreneurial development. Studies have highlighted that proactive library engagement can foster critical competencies, including digital literacy, problem-solving, and communication skills, which are essential for career success (Olanrewaju, 2024). However, the impact of these programs on career development remains underexplored. Challenges such as insufficient funding, lack of tailored programs, and limited community awareness may hinder the effectiveness of these initiatives (Fatima, 2023). This study will explore the extent to which library outreach initiatives contribute to career development among youths in Epe and identify strategies to enhance the efficacy of such programs (Babatunde, 2024).
Statement of the problem
Despite the implementation of career-oriented library outreach programs in Epe, many youths do not fully benefit from these initiatives. Inadequate customization of programs, limited collaboration with industry experts, and low participation rates have contributed to suboptimal career development outcomes. These challenges have led to a misalignment between program objectives and the career needs of the youth population (Ike, 2024). This study seeks to examine the barriers impeding the effective impact of library outreach on career development and to propose interventions that can bridge this gap, ensuring that library services are aligned with the evolving demands of the job market (Chukwu, 2023).
